The Free Art Tree is a gift of creativity in the spirit of care for, and connection to, the living earth.
Hi, I'm Steve. I’m an artist, urban planner, land use lawyer, and professor of landscape architecture — but my Free Art Tree may be the most meaningful work I do. I create art and offer it freely outside my home, not for profit, but as an act of generosity, connection, and hope. My dream is that each piece taken inspires a deeper commitment to land care — especially through supporting Indigenous land return and stewardship. With the reality of the accelerating climate crisis, giving land back to Indigenous stewardship is one of the most powerful tools we have to attempt to adapt. This small act — sharing art with no expectation — is how I plant seeds for a more just, beautiful, and resilient world.
All are welcome to share their own art on the Free Art Tree—or start one of their own. Read more about the backstory here.
Support Land Preservation and Indigenous Stewardship
It would be awesome if the Free Art Tree inspires people to support Indigenous voices and stewardship and Land Back,. I support Land Back because returning land to Indigenous stewardship is essential — not only for justice, but for survival. Indigenous peoples have cared for these lands for thousands of years with deep knowledge, respect, and reciprocity. In a time of accelerating climate crisis, we urgently need those values at the center of how we live with the Earth. Land Back is about restoring relationships, rebalancing power, and returning care where it belongs. As someone who has shaped land through plans, design, and law, I realize how broken our systems are, And I have learned that repair begins by listening to those who were here first.
This is an excellent overview of Land Back in Washington State by Barbara Leigh Smith.

About My Work
I am a multidisciplinary artist exploring the intersections of place, expression, and stewardship across the landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. I’m inspired by the sublime —those moments of connection to a living planet that words alone cannot capture. My work moves between the representational and the abstract, guided by emotion, ecology, and place.
As an artist, I’m learning to unlearn/relearn through the work of contemporary Indigenous artists like:
The climate crisis is not just a technical emergency—it is a cultural, spiritual, and relational shattering, rooted in generations of disconnection and dispossession. I believe art can be a tool for repair, reconnecting us to land, to each other, and to our responsibilities.
With my Free Art Tree, I give my art away freely—not as a transaction, but as an offering. Each piece is a seed of relationship, asking: What would it mean to give more than we take? What if creativity, shared without expectation, could help heal the world?
This practice is both expression and activism—a small gesture toward reparative justice, ecological healing, and with the goal of returning land to Indigenous care.
All are welcome to share their own art on the Free Art Tree—or start one of their own.
